LLPOA LAKE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE UPDATE
March 10, 2026
inform & educate residents; develop sustainable lake management solutions
- Geese deterrents – The geese are back and looking for nesting spots. Shoreline buffer strips and garden fencing are the best geese deterrents for lakefront homeowners. Look for pairs of geese who are looking for nesting
spots. One pair has already claimed one of the floating islands in North Bay. We will be checking the geese lights and putting them back in the proper positions after we get some pontoon boats delivered. It is difficult to do this
using kayaks.
- Water circulators – We plan on installing a second circulator at South Beach and installing one circulator at North Beach. We are getting estimates for putting in the necessary electrical so we can install the circulators. We are targeting the South Beach cleanup to install the circulator at South Beach.
- Biodredge options – We plan to use the same product as last year which yielded similar results as the previous product but is less costly and much easier to apply. We also plan to offer lakefront homeowners the opportunity to again purchase biodredge material for use along their shoreline.
- Contracts – The board approved the 3 contract recommendations from our committee. McCloud will again do the 1 time spray to eradicate the invasive curly leaf plants. Lake Monsters will again be doing the weed harvesting. Keystone will be doing the fish stocking. All 3 were the lowest bidders.
- Fencing and geese deterrents for the South Beach swim area – Paul and John P. will be looking into a new design for fencing at the South Beach swim area for the summer months. The focus will be to make it easier for homeowners to access the swim area. Paul and Brian are currently looking into the possibility of using a curtain type device with flotation on the surface that would deter the goslings from entering the swim area and then the beach. This option would not be fencing on the beach but would be placed in the water encircling the swim area outside the pier and would not have to be moved by residents using the swim area. There was much discussion on this proposal and Paul and Brian will continue to work on this proposed idea.
- Silt traps – Paul is researching building and installing some type of silt trap at our major inflow areas. This would help reduce the silt buildup in our lake. The current idea is to build and deploy one to see how feasible it would be. The previous Mundelein Public Works Director was receptive to the village pumping out the silt traps for us provided they were very close to the street. Robin is going to check with the new Public Works Director to see if they are
also receptive to the idea.
- Roger attended sessions of the recent HOA Workshop put on by Stormwater Management and gave an update to the group. Stormwater Management is willing to help any group prepare and submit a grant application.
- Lake County Health Department Ecological Services will be doing an evaluation of Loch Lomond, St Mary’s Lake and Butler Lake this summer. The resulting lake reports will be a very similar format to the 2015 report for Loch Lomond that is on our website. The data, findings and recommendations from this report will be valuable to us in evaluating our current efforts to improve our lake water quality and for directing our lake management plan for next year.
