LLPOA LAKE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE UPDATE

June 10, 2025

inform & educate residents; develop sustainable lake management solutions

Our next Lake Management Committee meeting date will be posted soon. The July meeting will be held at North Beach (weather permitting). Check the events page for more details.

  1. Summer Kickoff – The purpose of this event is to showcase how to safely enjoy our lake. A side benefit is that events like this will help us with future grant opportunities. We had a lower turnout this year but all who attended
had a good time. Thanks to the volunteers who helped with kayak lessons, boat rides, food prep, live music and kids games. We had a really good presentation on water safety from the Mundelein Fire Department. This event
has not gotten enough attention and attendance from the residents so we will probably discontinue next year.
  2. Biodredge material was applied in Firth Channel, North Bay, Half Moon Bay and South Beach. We will have 1 more application next month. The results will be measured in the fall and published. We are trying a new product this year that is less expensive and easier to handle and apply. We will continue to monitor and evaluate the results. For the second year in a row, lakefront homeowners purchased more material for our lake than LLPOA did which is a
great show of support for our lake.
  3. Carp – Thirty carp were removed from our lake in June with the help of the Lake County Health Department Ecological Services team. Thanks to Marty for the last minute help he provided on the boat. We have removed 153 carp from our lake since November 2023. Carp are detrimental to the water quality of our lake which is why we are trying to remove them.
  4. Weed harvesting – The weed harvester was on our lake last week for the first time this year. They will be on our lake every other week thru September. Last week the harvester removed 20 trailer loads of weeds from our lake. Thanks to the 12 volunteers we had raking the weeds in the shallow swim area at South Beach. We plan to have more weed raking parties! So why not come on down and meet some of your fun neighbors while helping to make our
swimming area more usable this summer.
  5. Lake Water Monitoring – Gerry was unable to attend. Tom presented some initial secchi results for this year. Comparing June of 2024 to June of 2025 we saw the following: North Bay was 41 inches in 2024 and 47 inches in 2025, South Bay was 36 inches in June 2024 and 47 inches in 2025, the dam was 36 inches in 2024 and whopping 81 inches in 2025! These results show water clarity improvement from last year at this time of year. Especially the reading at the dam. Looking through old secchi data that dates back to 1999 there has been only 1 other time where we had a secchi reading of 80 or higher. That’s 26 years worth of secchi data!
  6. The sign for the native plant buffer strip at South Beach was installed this week, thanks to Randy and Walt. This sign was part of the original design and plan. The sign will be used to inform and educate residents about the various native plants in the buffer strip as well as lake ecology. The plan is to rotate sign content periodically. Check it out the next time you are at South Beach.
  7. Geese update – Three families of geese and goslings totalling 28 geese have been spotted on our lake. The good news is that our geese numbers continue to be low compared to previous years. We have not had any success in identifying where the goose nests were. We want to continue to discourage and harass them so that they leave our lake as soon as the goslings can fly. As a reminder, an adult goose can produce 2 pounds of
excrement a day. So that’s 56 pounds every day! Not a good thing for our beaches, lake or lakefront yards.
  8. The annual Tony Baade Father’s Day Weekend Fishing Derby is this Saturday from 9:00 AM to Noon at South Beach. Registration begins at 9:00 AM at South. There are 2 divisions: Kids (13 and younger) which is free and Adults (over 13) which has a $5 entry fee.
  9. Our next Lake Management Committee meeting will be held at North Beach (weather permitting).
