LLPOA LAKE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE UPDATE
October 13, 2026
inform & educate residents; develop sustainable lake management solutions
- Update on gates at North and South Beach – The large double gate at North Beach was damaged and the gate leaf on one side was broken off. The board is looking at temporary solutions as replacing the leaf is weeks or months away depending on parts and weather. The boat launch gate at South Beach was ‘adjusted’ to help prevent unauthorized access that was happening from individuals pushing the gate in or reaching over to unlock it. Please enter through the key card main gate and open the boat launch gate from inside the fence.
- Gerry Munley gave a presentation on the water sampling that he has been doing on our lake with Doug Johnson. Gerry also coordinates the water testing for 21 other lakes in Lake County through the Lake County Lake Lovers group. The presentation was very informative and will be posted to the Loch Lomond website soon. Key highlights were that our phosphorous levels have been lower than expected (probably due to the weed harvesting) and that our dissolved oxygen levels have remained very good throughout the summer. The combination of hot weather, strong winds and large rainfalls have made it a challenging summer for the lakes in our area. The good news is that our lake has fared better than most through this summer. Here is a link
to Gerry’s presentation.
- Tom followed Gerry’s presentation by reviewing the current lake conditions and the effect the recent heavy rain and seasonal lake turnover had with a late season algal bloom.
- Stormwater Management Commission/Water Management Board (SMC/WMB) grant update – Roger, Kevin and Tom completed work on a grant submission for the spillway repairs at the dam along with the shoreline stabilization on the east shoreline at South Beach. The grant was submitted on time and included letters of support from the Village of Mundelein and the Mundelein Park and Recreation District. The final decision on grant awards will be in January.
- Recent water inflow at North Beach – On Friday October 9 from around 9:00 AM until 6:30 PM we experienced a large inflow of water over the North Beach spillway (thanks to Nancy P. for alerting us). We reached out to the Mudelein Park and Recreation District since they are upstream from us. They were not able to pinpoint the reason for the sudden increase in water into our
lake. We will continue to investigate with them.
- Beavers have been seen in North Bay and are actively looking for food. Please ensure your trees, especially smaller trees, in your yard are wrapped to discourage the beavers. Hardware cloth at least 36 inches up from the ground is what is recommended.
- Open discussion covered a variety of questions and topics.
- Mark your calendars for:
- The LLPOA Annual Meeting will be held on Saturday November 14 at 3:00 PM at Mechanics Grove School. We’d love to have a quorum of homeowners for the 3rd consecutive year. If you can not attend in person make sure you fill out a proxy form ahead of time and give it to a neighbor or board member. More information to come on this important meeting.
