LLPOA LAKE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE UPDATE

April 7, 2025

inform & educate residents; develop sustainable lake management solutions

Our next Lake Management Committee meeting will be Monday May 12, 7:00 PM at the Fremont Library. We are moving the day of the week for next month’s meeting due to room availability.

  1. Geese status – We have more fencing up on residents shorelines this year than last year and it is paying offwith less geese seen on our lake this spring. Thank you to the residents who have added fencing at their shoreline and thanks to Paul Saydak who has installed shoreline fencing for several residents. Paul has also made some sturdier geese fences for the boat launch areas at both North and South Beach. We are still looking for any geese nests around the lake. If you suspect a goose nest please reach out to Tom at tomcasey@lochlomondlake.com with the location. The Mundelein Park District has added a goose light like we have in the park district pond next to the Dolan Recreation Center. This pond flows directly into our lake so this light is a very good thing for us. Loch Lomond has been asked to share our geese success story with multiple area lake groups. Thanks to Gerry Munley and Marty Szostak for giving the presentation at the recent Lake County Lake Lover’s Group meeting.

  2. Gerry Munley gave an update on the new Pilot Lake Monitoring Program. This group has started this month taking various measurements of the lake water. Loch Lomond was one of twelve lakes chosen to participate. Thanks to Gerry for helping us get into this program and for volunteering to be one of the leaders of the group. The data collected on our lake by Gerry and the other lakes will help guide our future decisions on how best to improve our lake water quality.

  3. The group discussed various options to improve the geese fencing in the swim area at South Beach. A shorter fencing in a less conspicuous color (like green) was suggested using the existing poles. Paul volunteered to make gates that swing open for the middle of the swim area shoreline. This will make it easier for residents to open and close the fence. The water circulator at South Beach has been turned on according to plan. The plan is to run the circulator from April 1 up until Thanksgiving.

  4. We will be installing a sign by the native plant buffer strip at South Beach. This sign was part of the original design and plan. The sign will be used to inform and educate residents about the various native plants in the buffer strip as well as lake ecology. The plan is to rotate sign content periodically.

  5. We recently became aware that in years past (not sure how many) temporary slats were put into the spillway in late spring to late summer to increase the water level in the lake. This was done to minimize the water level drop in the heat of the summer. We will be investigating this process for potential use this year. Anyone with knowledge of the prior process, please contact Tom.

  6. Paul is preparing to meet with the Mundelein Public Works Department to discuss ideas on what we can do collaboratively to help improve water quality issues with our lake.

  7. The group discussed plans for having the Lake Management Summer Kickoffagain this year. We are looking for volunteers for kayak lessons, people who can let us use their kayak for the afternoon, boats and drivers to give residents boat rides, fishermen and fisherwomen to help with kids fishing lessons, someone to help with a few kids activities and Roger Hammer will be providing live music. The purpose behind this event is to showcase our

lake and how we can safely use the lake during the summer. Anyone interested in helping out at the event please reach out to Tom.

  8. We are planning on ordering biodredge material again this year. We have had success over the past 3 years in reducing the amount of silt at the bottom of the lake. We will once again offer shoreline residents the opportunity to purchase, at their own expense, biodredge material for use around their piers and shorelines. We will be using a different product this year that is less expensive and easier to apply. Please reach out to Tom for more information on how to purchase the material. We will be ordering the product this month.

  9. We are looking for a volunteer to run the Tony Baade Father’s Day Weekend fishing tournament on the morning of Saturday June 14. The tournament runs from 8:00 AM to Noon on Saturday morning. Please reach out to Tom for details if you can help out.

  10. A question was raised about whether the new Ivanhoe Village development west of the Home Depot would impact our lake. I can confirm that there should be no impact to our lake as that property is outside of our lake’s watershed area. For those interested, the Loch Lomond Lake watershed map can be found on page 27 of the Hey and Associates Long Term Plan document which can be found on our LLPOA website.
