On Monday night the LLPOA Board approved our committee’s request for 6 of the 11 additional weed harvesting days. They also approved the request to add a water circulator at South Beach for the swimming area.
The weed harvester was out on our lake for 3 days this week and removed 15 1/2 trailer loads of weeds, approximately 23,000 pounds total. Combining this with weed removal 2 weeks ago means that we have removed over 50,000 pounds of weeds from our lake this year. The benefits of removing the weeds this way instead of chemical spraying is that it removes the nutrients from our lake and the dead plant material from the spraying does not increase the silt in the bottom of our lake. We believe we are starting to see some positive signs from these efforts as well as from volunteers raking at South Beach and an increasing number of lakefront homeowners removing weeds themselves. We are seeing clearer water along shorelines including North and South Beach. We are also seeing an increase in other native plants in the lake like elodea, charra and sago pondweed. If you are interested in what these plants look like Google images is a good place to look. If you do come across any of these three plants, please do not remove them. Achieving a more balanced plant diversity in our lake is one of our goals.
The weed harvester will be back out on our lake on July 1, 2, 16, 17, 18, 29, 30 and 31.
