LLPOA LAKE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE UPDATE

May 28, 2024

inform & educate residents; develop sustainable lake management solutions

The weed harvester was scheduled to be here this week but with all the rain they are running behind schedule and are now scheduled to be on our lake Monday thru Wednesday next week.

With the help of Lake County Health Department Ecological Services we removed 32 carp from our lake. These were very large grass and common carp with the largest being over 50 pounds (that is not a typo). We will continue our efforts to remove carp throughout the summer. The carp have a negative effect on our lake water quality primarily through eating plants and stirring up the silt on the bottom of our lake. A carp can eat its body weight in plants each day and the amount of excrement they produce is worse than the geese.

We are combining the Kids Fishing Derby normally held the morning of Lochfest with the Tony Baade Father’s Day Fishing Derby. Both will be held on Saturday June 15 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Check in for both fishing derbies will be at South Beach.

We are holding our first Raking Party for the South Beach swim area also on Saturday June 15 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at South Beach. Please join us if you can in helping to maintain our swim area this summer. We are also looking at water circulating options to improve the water quality for the South Beach swim area. We will be discussing these options at the next Lake Management committee meeting on June 11.

We continue to see the 4 geese families on our lake use some homeowners’ lakefront lawns for feeding. If your neighbor has geese on their lawn encourage them to put up geese deterrents such as short garden fencing on their shoreline. We have more lakefront homeowners with geese fencing up this year but we still have many that do not. Having large families of geese on our lake is detrimental to our lake water quality in many ways. So we need more geese deterrents on homeowners shorelines. Please also remember to put the geese fencing back up at North Beach and South Beach if you take it down.
