LLPOA LAKE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE UPDATE
March 5, 2024
inform & educate residents; develop sustainable lake management solutions
We will NOT have a March meeting.
The geese lights were repositioned after the ice moved them on us and the non-functioning lights were replaced at no cost since they are still under warranty. Thanks to First Mate Marty who helped with this including doing all the heavy lifting. The floating islands will be repositioned later (we’re going to need a bigger boat…..). We will also be assessing the plants on the floating islands to see how they survived the winter.
We would like to remind ALL lakefront homeowners to check their shoreline geese deterrents. This is nesting season and the geese are back looking for a nice spot to build their nests. If you have geese deterrents at your shoreline but your neighbor doesn’t please pass on the information below and encourage them to add deterrents. Otherwise the geese will just climb up on their shoreline and walk over to your yard. We have been pushing this for over a year now and we have made good progress but we need more lakefront homeowners to get on board. The more homeowners we have doing this the less geese we will have on our lake, beaches and yards.
We have added more information on our website ‘Information Sheets and Links’ section for you to check out (thanks Gerry and Marty!). You can find them by clicking here, just scroll down the page to the Information Sheets and Links Section.
The new additions are these:
- Deterrents Deterrents for Geese and Beavers
- Indiana Department of Natural Resources – Canada Geese Behavior & Biology
- Geese Relief – Canadian Geese Breeding Season
The foxes have returned to Loch Lomond this year which is a good sign. There is no deterrent more effective for the geese than a natural predator.
There is an excellent exhibit at the Lake County Forest Preserves Dunn Museum on Managing Healthy Landscapes. I encourage anyone interested in learning more about this to check it out. It runs through April 7.
If you are looking for information on the invasive Buckthorn here is a link to a good article on the LCFPD website.
We will be looking for volunteers for the South Beach cleanup and Lake Management Summer Kickoff on Saturday May 18. We’ll talk more about this at our April Lake Management Committee Meeting.
Contract update – At the February meeting I was asked to keep the committee updated on the status of the Lake Management contracts (spring spraying for invasive plants and summer weed harvesting). The Board has not met yet to approve those contracts. Several of you have reached out to me regarding the LLPOA Assessment letter that you should have received this past week and the reference to the funding of the spring lake management contracts. The letter states that payments prior to March 31 will be used to fund our spring lake management contracts. I do not know how this is being tracked but I am confident it will not hold up the contracts as Lake Management had a large surplus at the end of last year’s budget cycle. I will reach out to the Board and have an update on the assessments collected at the April Lake Management Committee meeting. If you have further questions on this, please feel free to reach out to me.
